Local Myths and Legends

There are a ton of back roads here and there is this road called "hells road" Supposedly many people have died on that road and along that road is cry baby bridge. They say that if you park on the bridge and put baby powder on your back bumper hand prints will appear. People have also heard baby's crying there. Any myths or legends from where you live?

Where are you talking about? Is that the "Hell's Gates" in Collinsville?

No, it's in the Bethalto area.

hmmm... Interesting. I wonder if that is kind of like "One of the 7 Wonders" type of a deal where each area has its own place that fits the story line. In Collinsville there is a place that is known as Hell's Gates there are supposedly 13 one lane tunnels out there. The trick is the last one only appears if you run through t he tunnels in a certain pattern. That tunnel supposedly is the final gate to Hell. There are a set of train tracks there that have a young child's spirit that pushes you off...or maybe onto the tracks...I cannot remember. Also there is a place called Acid Bridge where a lot of people have had many strange experiences from tribal bets in the woods, shadow people, werewolves, and possessions. A lot of people have tried to commit suicide at Acid Bridge as well. Of course the name comes from the fact that people tend to do drugs out there. But I have been there, sober, and have seen strange things as well. Also there is a small un-cared for cemetery out there that is supposedly the grounds of a small demon that looks like a demented baby.

Yeah I've heard of that (the 7 gates) it's in the Weird Illinois book by Troy Taylor. I've always wanted to find them all just to see what would happen for myself. Road trip! lol. I heard that the 7th gate is almost impossible to find. It all sounds very interesting though.

Is it 7? Ah oh well... The story sounds cool either way. Really the gates in Collinsville start less than 5 miles from my home...

we have alot of limestone in our area its sposta hold energy thats why there are so much paranormal happenings in this area the bluffs are almost all limestone .
